sound samples
modified circuit diagram sound samples

Alan Richards has carried out Bill D's mod and likes it very much - so much so, that he has recorded some samples that illustrate the effect of the change...

The first set of samples (605k mp3) was recorded direct (no amp to colour the tone) showing multiple samples. There are six groups of chords, going from Varitone selection 1 through 6, alternating between treble bleed out, then treble bleed in - like this:

bulletVaritone 1, treble bleed out
bulletVaritone 1, treble bleed in
bulletVaritone 2, treble bleed out
bulletVaritone 2, treble bleed in
bulletVaritone 3, treble bleed out
bulletVaritone 3, treble bleed in
bulletVaritone 4, treble bleed out
bulletVaritone 4, treble bleed in
bulletVaritone 5, treble bleed out
bulletVaritone 5, treble bleed in
bulletVaritone 6, treble bleed out
bulletVaritone 6, treble bleed in

The second set of samples (114k mp3) has a short lick (recorded through an amp) that first has the treble bleed bypassed, then activated. Note the thicker tone with the bypass de-activated.

One down-side to using the mod is that the single pickup settings are not as loud as when both pickups are engaged. With the treble bleed they are balanced in volume. You also may want to readjust both the neck and bridge pickups' height to get the optimum tone.
