older=better? pretend old dentist guitars valves/tubes golden aged guitars

Are older guitars better?

Not necessarily - it is widely agreed that both Gibson and Fender, for example, went through a period around the 70s when quality was generally poor (see golden age guitars ). Age will probably not have improved these guitars - although it is interesting to note that they are starting to fetch premium prices.

Remember lots of things about electric guitars do not improve with age -

bullettuners on older guitars were often intolerable and certainly didn't improve with age and use
bulletmany older pickups have deteriorated through failure of the insulating lacquer on the winding, and loss of magnetic flux from the pickup magnets
bulletthe wiring and components - especially pots - deteriorate badly with age

All eras of guitar production will produce great instruments - however these are usually a minority - just buying old does not guarantee anything except age.
