have their been golden ages for guitars?

Well yes - in the negative sense that there have definitely been times in the production of both Fender and Gibson guitars, for example, when the accountants ruled, and profits were the single-minded motivation. Under these circumstances commitment to quality and end-user satisfaction almost inevitably take a nose-dive.

Conversely, the times when profits weren't an obsession, and workers were well paid/motivated/managed must therefore, by comparison represent something of a golden age. However these times tend not to coincide for different makers - so there has never been single golden age. Nostalgia notwithstanding, the 50s and early 60s were a time when as many shitty guitars as good ones were made - I know I owned and played some of them. It seems likely that most of the shitty guitars have disappeared, leaving the good ones - and an impression that all the guitars from those time were wonderful.
